A Legendary Night for Charity

This past Tuesday, I had the pleasure of attending a dinner event to mobilize support for the Show Me Campaign. Founded by 5-time Grammy Award winner John Legend, a longstanding supporter of Millennium Promise and our community-level partnership with the people of Mbola, Tanzania, the mission of Show Me is to end poverty through sustainable development, education and service at the individual, family and community levels.

The Show Me Campaign is a grassroots movement that calls on all of us to commit to making a difference in the world. It is run by Kweli Washington, someone I’ve been proud to know as a colleague and friend since graduate school days. Kweli is a gifted leader–visionary, passionate and deeply knowledgeable about the issues–and on Tuesday night he and John touched us all with their words about the fight against poverty and why action today is so critical.

The event was held on the rooftop of the Soho House in Manhattan and emceed by the charismatic former NY Giants running back Tiki Barber. Millennium Promise co-founder Jeff Sachs shared remarks on John’s remarkable public outreach and leadership in recent years.
The highlight of the night was surely John’s special open-air performance. Alone at the piano, he took requests to six songs — including Show Me, his song detailing a conversation with God about the state of our world today.

John has committed to mobilizing his remarkable talent, intellect and platform to educate and engage others on opportunities for people to improve the world and help end extreme poverty. His ongoing support for the people in Mbola has helped them gain access to clean water, health care and education while also providing them with the tools they need to increase food production dramatically. All of us at Millennium Promise are grateful to John, Kweli and the Show Me team for their remarkable partnership and dedication. Their work is an inspiration and highlights the full range of actions that each of us can take to help achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
