ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

At Millennium Promise, we believe that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including the end of poverty, can be achieved by 2030, even in the most challenging and remote parts of the world. By mobilizing cutting-edge science and technology for effective local development, Millennium Promise seeks to accelerate sustainable development across rural sub-Saharan Africa and beyond. From 2005-2015, Millennium Promise provided the operational platform and resource mobilization for the Millennium Villages Project, which deployed a holistic, science-based approach to accelerate progress on the Millennium Development Goals for more than 500,000 people across sub-Saharan Africa. We continue to build on this work to implement the SDGs at the sub-national level through several key initiatives; including the Sustainable Districts Program, Connect To Learn, and the One Million Community Health Workers Campaign.

POSITION                          Communications Specialist

Position Summary

The Communications Specialist will contribute to a raised awareness within the public domain about the efforts made by Millennium Promise toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals at subnational level in Rural Africa. The Communications specialist will provide information, communication and related capacity building support for Millennium Promise. He will report to the CEO of Millennium Promise.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

-        Oversee communications efforts for Millennium Promise, Sustainable Districts Program sites, Connect To Learn, and the One Million Community Health Workers Campaign and related stakeholders throughout Africa;

-        Maintain relationship with the media;

-        Lead the organization of major communications events;

-        Coordinate high-level partner initiatives with stakeholders;

-        Serve as spokesperson on sustainable development issues; and coordinate high-level visits by team members, donors, board members;

-       Manage the design, development and dissemination of Millennium Promise communication material -on special initiatives, flagship and special programs, MP- including briefs, brochures, PowerPoint presentations, web features, blogs, newsletters, press releases, website and social media content;

-       Promote the project’s results in national media by organizing and facilitating interviews with Millennium Promise senior officials and experts Develop concepts of various communications products such as TV programmes, publications and other promotional or information materials;

-       Develop and coordinate the implementation of the communications strategy and work plan of the projects according to the Millennium Villages Project communication guidelines;

-       Closely coordinate and monitor visibility activities;

-       Other related responsibilities as required.

Key Deliverables throughout Project:

Key deliverables will be increased media coverage of Millennium Promise project and its team members in Africa, smoother and more effective events (including press conferences) for senior officials increased visibility and buy-in for Millennium Promise’s work in Africa (including by donors); production of new material for general and donor communications.

Qualifications

-       Knowledge and understanding of sustainable development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Millennium Villages project.

-       Fluency in spoken and written French and English required; fluency in regional and local dialects strongly preferred.

-       Ability to analyze, plan, communicate effectively orally and in writing, draft report, solve problems, manage PR projects, organize and meet expected results, adapt to different environments (cultural, economic, political and social).

-       Strong familiarity with news agencies, government institutions, and PR agencies in Africa.

-       Five years of progressively responsible experience in information and communication, or journalism, in PR agency or company or in development/research institutions or projects

-       Demonstrated experience in developing and executing communications plans and programmes

-       Commitment to accuracy and attention to detail.

-       Strong organizational skills and ability to work under pressure.

-       Excellent written and oral communication skills.

-       Strong interpersonal skills; courtesy, tact, patience and team orientation.

-       Excellent project management skills, highly organized.

-       Demonstrated ability to handle/maintain confidential information.

-       Relevant working experience in Millennium Promise Africa mandate area

-       Ability to travel internationally for several weeks at a time.

Education, Training and Experience

-       Local candidates with demonstrated professional expertise and built-in networks are strongly encouraged to apply.

-       Advanced university degree in Journalism/Mass Communications, information management or related fields.

-       International/NGO/journalism/information and communication experience preferred.

POSITION                           Regional Finance Assistant

Position Summary

Reporting to the Regional Finance manager, the Finance Assistant is responsible for maintaining accurate books and records of the Millennium Promise Regional Office and overseeing the maintenance of accurate books and records at the site level.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

-        Coordinate with the sites and assisting in the timely preparation of annual site-level and Regional office budgets.

-        Prepare monthly reporting package for Regional Director and HQ. Reporting package includes regional level and site level financial analytics of operating results , consolidated trial balance, P&L, Balance Sheet, Statement of Cash Flows

-        Monitor bank accounts of the regional site locations

-        Review Cluster level monthly cash forecasts.

-        Provide cash forecasts to the Director of Finance to assure adequate funding of the regional bank accounts.

-        Ensure that all accounting policies and procedures are strictly adhered to at the Site and Regional Offices. Report deviations to the Regional Director and Millennium Promise management.

-        Respond to audit requests

-        Maintain accurate books and records of the operating expenses of the Regional Center, including entry of the budget into QuickBooks, coding and processing accounts payable and subsequent payment, reconciling to the budget, and preparing monthly financial reporting of the Regional Center

-        Process accounts payable for MDG Center operating expenses: coding, data entry, aging analysis and check runs

-        Maintain daily cash balances, foreign currency adjustments, void checks, and monthly bank reconciliations for the Regional Centers checking account.

-        Produce based on QuickBooks, the reporting of grant’s spending level and their conformity

-        Ensure that advances made to employees are justified properly and on time

-        Perform quarterly budget analysis and report to Finance Manager on expenditure trends, project budget overrun and recommend corrective measures where necessary

-        Ensure inventory of fixed assets

-        Relationships with Ecobank managers

-        Ensure replenishment and  petty cash reconciliation

-        Any other accounting, financial, and administrative tasks that you may be assigned from time to time

Qualifications/Requirements

-        Master’s degree as a minimum in accounting or finance from an accredited university or college

-        Proven experience of at least 4 years

-        Knowledge or familiarity with the work of international organizations or international non-profits and their financial and accounting processes

-        Fluency in English and French

-        Strong analytical skills

-        Computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel

-        Proficiency on QuickBooks

 

POSITION                 Senior Agribusiness Manager

Organization:          Millennium Promise Alliance Inc.        

LOCATION:                Dakar – Senegal

Position Summary:

The role of the Senior Agribusiness Manager is to ensure the effective and efficient planning, coordination and implementation of the agribusiness portfolio across Sustainable District Program (SDP) sites. Working as part of a larger team at Millennium Promise, the Senior Agribusiness Manager will be in charge of identifying local entrepreneurs and innovations, strengthening Farmer-Based Organizations, structuring agreements, promoting knowledge management, assisting in the actual implementation of the initiatives, and ensuring the timely and effective provision of technical support to the SDP sites in order to promote economic growth and employment. He will report to the Chief Operating Officer.

  • ·       Manage the Sustainable District Program agribusiness portfolio;
  • ·       Manage the Africa-based Millennium Promise agribusiness team;
  • ·       Develop and execute yearly work plans and manage the overall budget and workflow;
  • ·       Assess progress towards goals and targets based on operational information.
Farmer-Based Organization Support

 

  • ·       Work with Sustainable District Project sites, assist smallholder farmers organize into Famer-Based Organizations (FBOs);
  • ·       Provide support to FBOs to act as aggregation points and access technical and financial services and markets;
  • ·       Promote Good Agronomic Practices and Nutrient Efficiency Management among FBOs.

Partnership Development

 

 

  • ·       Promote, build and manage relationships and partnerships with business partners and value chain actors;
  • ·       Oversee the development and implementation of contracts and other agreements pertaining to business development initiatives across the sites; and
  • ·       Ensure a strong, effective working relationship among value chain actors.

Project Identification and Planning

 

 

  • ·       Lead the design and implementation of the Sustainable District Program sites value chain development strategy in Africa;
    • ·    Work with Sustainable District Program country teams, and identify agribusiness opportunities for main agricultural value chains, across Sustainable District Program sites;
    • ·    For agribusiness opportunities identified, assess viability, select innovations and technologies to be promoted, develop pricing models, identify primary and secondary markets, and develop P/L’s and cash flows;
    • ·    Facilitate the development of an ecosystem of support and ancillary services in Sustainable District Program sites;
    • ·    Catalyze the creation of small- and medium-sized enterprises to accelerate local economic growth and employment; and
    • ·    Provide support throughout execution of agribusiness initiatives.

Information Sharing and Documentation

 

 

  • ·       Contribute to the program knowledge management efforts with technical briefings and other reports, record methods being used, share experiences, identify good practices, and pinpoint the gaps in knowledge in the implementation of project activities across sites;
  • ·       Ensure the production of high quality reports on a regular basis that can be shared with project investors and donors.

 

 

Minimum qualifications:

  • Master degree in Business Administration, Agronomy, Agricultural Economics, or related area;
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience working in value chain development in Africa;
  • Demonstrated practical experience in managing teams and/or business in Africa and problem solving;
  • Proven problem solving and organizational skills, flexibility and calm under pressure;
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills in English, and French desirable;
  • Must have excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal and analytical skills, be a team player and detail-oriented;
  • Demonstrated ability to compile and report results of management activities;
  • Highly motivated with a professional background in agriculture, and agribusiness; and
  • Computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Additional qualifications:

  • Knowledge of agro-finance is a plus;
  • Be able to represent Millennium Promise among different stakeholders;
  • Flexibility to travel within sub-Saharan Africa at least 50% of time;
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams; and
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize information to develop practical agribusiness models.
